UFO Atlas in class

Students follow a geography route: a riddle, a place to find on the globe, a question after the reveal. They play without an account, using the class link.

This is a trial. UFO Atlas is a personal project: it is not endorsed by any education authority, and no match with a school curriculum has been established. The pilot is for students aged 13 and up.

How a session runs

01 · BEFORE

Ask for a link

0n3Up creates the class code and its route. Give the number of students and, on shared computers, the number of turns.

02 · TRY

Test on site

Open the link on a classroom computer: the network must allow the globe (list below) and the computer must display it smoothly.

03 · IN CLASS

Play

Each computer opens the link. On a shared computer, the “Next student” key starts fresh for the next student.

During the session

  • The screen only shows the class routes: no game menu, account, rewards, postcards or links to other sites.
  • The grade and score appear at the end of the route. During the pilot, the simplest way is to note them on paper: there is no teacher area.
  • A game stays tied to the computer's browser: “Next student” makes it unavailable.
  • This mode stays on for 10 hours on the computer. To stop it sooner: playufoatlas.com/geohunt/?classe=0. It signs out any personal account open in that browser.
  • It simplifies the screen but does not lock the computer: a student can leave the site or open the full game at another address.

Personal data sheet

Draft, to be reviewed by the head of the school and its data protection officer before any use with students. It describes how classroom mode works and is not an approval.

What is stored

  • An anonymous identifier per student or turn, with no name, e-mail or password.
  • Game data: games, pods placed, scores, progress, answers to questions, code used.
  • The hosts' technical logs, including the IP address, under their policies.

What is not requested

  • No student name or date of birth.
  • Please do not ask students to enter their identity in the game.
  • No ads, audience tools or sale of data.

Retention and deletion

  • A guest is erased automatically after 30 days without signing in.
  • To request earlier deletion, contact the publisher with the class code.
  • Because identifiers are anonymous, a given student can only be traced from their computer, while the game is open there.

Where the data goes

  • Supabase: database and games, servers in the European Union (Ireland).
  • Vercel: website hosting, a US company.
  • OpenFreeMap, Esri, Wikimedia Commons: maps and photos. They receive the IP address to send the images.
  • Technical data may be processed outside the EU, under the safeguards described on the legal page.

To decide with the school

  • Who is responsible for this processing, and whether it goes in the school's records. The legal page names the publisher for the game in general; school use remains to be specified.
  • The information to give families.

Content

Game texts mix true facts with the humour of an alien point of view. They may contain mistakes: read the route before the session. A route is built by hand, place by place, so one can be prepared around a theme. In classroom mode only routes are shown: the game's 5 places with sensitive themes appear only if a route contains them, and none does today.
